The Genre Of Indian English Literature

Before delving into the history and evolution of Indian English Literature you should first know what it is already about. It is the total body of work that has been written by the writers of India who work with English language and whose native language may not be English. Indian English Literature is also known as Indo-Anglian Literature is some parts of the country. Looking a little back over the recent brigade of Indian English writers we can start with the man who first wrote under this title, a book called Travels of Dean Mahomet. It was basically a travel narrative. Then came the first Nobel laureate in Indian literature arena, Rabindranath Tagore who was comfortable with both English and Bengali language. He even translated some of his own work into English that went on to capture the imagination of hundreds and thousands around the globe. The first writer to win United State’s literary award was Dhan Gopal Mukherjee.

 

Perhaps the most popular amongst the early English Indian writers is R.K.Narayan. If you have read his Malgudi Days then you can safely be tagged as his fan. The writer wrote about the rural life of small quaint towns and villages that dotted South India and the utter simplicity can be said to be its main beauty. With an Indian Visa you can find yourself on the places where Swami and his friends pulled out pranks, almost the same old school buildings on river banks or the banyan trees, the shady courtyards etc. Mulk Raj Anand can be said to be harsher in his portrayal of rural India as he brought under light the stark differences between the rich and poor, caste discriminations etc.
